Sony knocked it out of the park with the latest PlayStation Showcase
Personally, I’ve been on the fence about getting a PS5. Even if there wasn’t such a shortage in supply for Sony’s latest-gen console, I just didn’t see enough games to make me want to buy one of them yet.
Now, after watching the latest Playstation Showcase, I might be changing my tune. If supplies are going to continue being low, I might have found the reason to try to secure one before all of the exclusives start coming out.
There were a ton of games shown off, and here’s are the ones that caught my eye the most.
God of War: Ragnarok
Boy, you don’t need an explanation as to why I’m excited about God of War: Ragnarok. The previous title in the series gave us the wondrous realms of Norse mythology to explore, and this direct continuation of Kartos and Atreus (who we now know to be Loki), may give us closure on all of the loose ends left over from God of War.
I played God of War on the PS4 for about ten straight days, with a highly disrupted sleep pattern, and finished it with a sense of wonder and anticipation about what would be next for the godly father and son. It also helps to see that favorite side characters from the previous game also make a turn, especially our favorite severed head Mimir.
Marvel’s Wolverine
We didn’t get any gameplay footage from Insomniac Games’ upcoming Wolverine title, but sometimes a teaser trailer is enough. Spider-Man was both a triumph for the PS4 on both the technical and gameplay fronts, and that game reminded me that being a superhero could be fun. The way they managed to capture Peter Parker’s essence, and create an open world in New York that felt gratifying to web-sling my way through, makes Spider-Man one of my favourite games of all time.
To hear that the studio behind Spider-Man is making Wolverine got my adrenaline pumping. Unlike the disappointment I felt after seeing the recent Marvel’s Midnight Suns gameplay footage, I have a better feeling about Wolverine. Insomniac Games has proven their mettle, and if we’re due to see an open-world game featuring Logan, I’m all for it. My only question is how they’re going to make movement as fun and engaging, since Logan doesn’t fly or webswing to get around. At this point, my imagination is enjoying the image of climbing buildings using Logan’s claws.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Speaking of Spider-Man, we also got the announcement trailer for Spider-Man 2 at the PlayStation showcase. First of all, seeing both Peter Parker and Miles Morales was enough to send my spidey sense tingling, and the short appearance from Venom at the end of the trailer just takes the cake. Again, there wasn’t any gameplay shown, but unlike Wolverine, there are no questions on my end about whether or not the gameplay will be fun.
Forspoken
I didn’t know anything about Forspoken before watching the recent showcase, and I still don’t know much up to now. However, the gameplay mechanics and movement, and seemingly charming main character has definitely piqued my attention.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake
There are few games as beloved as the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) and its sequel. Although the games released in buggy states all those years ago, and it took a community mod to unlock content that had been cut from the game, KOTOR is still one of the best Star Wars roleplaying experiences in history. If it’s getting the full remake treatment, it better be good, because the original game and its sequel still hold a special place in my heart, warts and all.
The five games above aren’t the only ones that were shown off, but they’re definitely the ones that I’m keeping tabs on moving forward. You can watch the full showcase below to see the other titles that were featured.
